MP3 LCD Display

lcddisplay.jpg (74035 bytes) I think that this is the coolest bit of this project. The LCD display is the bit that tells the driver what is going on with the MP3 player. If configured correctly the LCD can display a whole host of things. I'm currently using a 16x2 display which is 'reversed'. This makes it easier to see in the dark as only the characters are lit up rather than an entire panel and so it should not ruin the drivers night vision.

The LCD plugin I chose for WinAmp allows just about any LCD display from a 16x1 to a 40x4 to be used. It also has a nifty emulator mode so that you can see how its going to look before you build/ buy the display.

You'll need a 5volt power supply and 2 variable resistors. The 5volts can be supplied by the PC from a spare drive power cable. Use a DMM to find the right wire.

Below is the wiring diagram for a typical Hitachi HD77480 based LCD display for connection to the parallel port of your PC. This is good up to the 20.4 sized displays. The same wiring can be used with the LCD display for Linux found elsewhere on this site.
