Scafell Pike - 3210ft

Scafell Pike from the Wasdale side

On Tuesday morning after a brief round of the ancient Scots sport of tent wrestling the scouts had packed their tents and joined the leaders caravan for the journey to Scafell Pike, the smallest of the 3 mountains.

The journey was intolerable. Starting out at 0630 we headed south to Glasgow. If you have driven through the highlands you will know that the going is not exactly fast but it wasn't helped by the fact that bus was playing up. We later discovered it was firing on only 3 cylinders.

It was a good opportunity to catch up on some much missed sleep.

We eventually got there some 8 hours later and started our ascent of the Pike. Starting from the Sethwaite Farm side we picked up the corridor route at Styhead Tarn, a pond on up in the mountain and a good starting point for many walks/climbs in that area.

The picture shows the boys as they start out from the farm for what should have been a 6 hour climb but as we started so late in the day we had to pull them off the hills at 1800 as we would have run out of light before we got back.

So the boys elected to stay overnight and tackle the Pike first thing in the morning and then drive to Snowdon in the afternoon. The light issue was not a problem on Snowdon as there is a clearly defined path that they could take and so could do it in the dark.

The overnight stay was in the loft of a barn on the farm. The farm was in full swing with lambing and calfing going on in the barn bellow us.

The picture shows the bomb site that was home for a few days.
